Halloween 2026 falls on Saturday, 31 October — a full weekend night, which means more parties, more trick-or-treating and a lot more messages flying around the group chat.
Here's the problem with almost all of them: they're the same forwarded pumpkin GIF, sent to fourteen people, opened by none.
This guide fixes that in two parts. First, 40+ copy-ready WhatsApp messages you can send as-is. Second, a card that isn't a picture at all — it's a tiny game your friend plays for twenty seconds and then immediately replays.
Why "trick or treat" is the best card idea on Halloween
Every other occasion has one script. You wish someone a happy birthday, they say thanks, it's over.
Trick or treat has a choice built into it. That's the whole tradition: a door, two words, and a decision. It's the rare greeting that already works as an interaction, which is why a card that makes someone pick a side gets replayed and a card that just says "Happy Halloween 🎃" gets a thumbs-up at best.
So the format writes itself:

The Trick or Treat card plays out as a short story on their phone.
They arrive at a haunted house. Fog on the ground, bats crossing the moon, a cat on the fence, pumpkins glowing along the path. The camera walks up toward the door — and a paper tag hanging on it comes into focus with their name written on it.
They knock. The knocker swings and strikes, dust falls off the frame, the cat jumps. Then an eye slides across the peephole and looks them up and down before the door creaks open. (It's the best second in the card.)
They choose. The screen splits in two. Purple ghost on the left, candy on the right. TRICK or TREAT.
- TRICK — two eyes open in the dark, a ghost bursts out with a BOO, bats scatter across the screen. Then it grins, says "Got you!" and admits it couldn't leave them without a treat anyway.
- TREAT — sweets rain down the screen, little pumpkins bounce, and a glowing jack-o'-lantern appears carrying a gift tag with your name on it. They tap it and it bursts open with light.
Both paths end in the same place: your photo rising out of magic smoke, their name in the headline, your message underneath, and your name at the bottom.
Then a "Play Again" button points out which side they didn't choose — so most people go straight back and play the other one.
It works on any phone browser. No app, no sign-up for them, nothing to install.

What to write inside the card
The message inside is different from the one on WhatsApp. They've already opened it, they've already played it, and they're on the last screen looking at your photo. This is the part they screenshot.
Two rules: be specific, and don't be spooky here. The scary bit already happened — the ending is where you're warm.

If you can't think of anything, answer one of these in a sentence:
- What did you two do last Halloween?
- What's their most-repeated costume?
- What would they absolutely pick — trick or treat — and are they predictable about it?
Sending it so it actually gets opened
Send the day before, or the morning of. Halloween night itself is chaos — costumes, parties, kids. A card sent at 7pm on the 31st gets buried.
Send it one to one, not to the group. The card has their name on the door. That effect disappears the moment it's in a group of forty.
Tell them to turn sound on. The card synthesises its own knock, creak, boo and candy pop. On silent it still works, but it's half the experience.
Don't explain it. "It's a Halloween card where you knock on a door and then you choose between two options and…" — no. "Knock on the door and pick a side" is enough. The mystery is the point.
Common questions
Will it scare a small child? The ghost pops and then immediately grins and apologises. There's no gore, no horror imagery, no sudden loud audio, and a mute button in the corner. Kids tend to pick TRICK deliberately, on purpose, repeatedly.
What if they pick the "wrong" one? There isn't one. Both paths reach your photo and your message — the trick path just takes a scenic detour through a ghost first.
Can I use it for a party invite? Yes. Put the where and when in your WhatsApp message; the card handles the atmosphere. Guests knock on a haunted door instead of reading a poster.
Can I post it to Instagram? You can export the card as an HD video for Stories or Reels. The video plays the treat path start to finish.
