Zhù nǐ hé jiārén zhōngqiū kuàilè, héjiā xìngfú — "Happy Mid-Autumn to you and your family, happiness to the whole household." Warm and formal enough for elders.

Before you send
Sending Chinese to an elder? Use 您 (nín, respectful "you") instead of 你, and lead with the family blessing — 阖家幸福 — before anything playful. Order matters more than vocabulary.
Korean Chuseok wishes
추석 (Chuseok) falls on the same full moon — Korea's biggest festival of the year, with songpyeon rice cakes in the role of mooncakes.

Haengbokhan chuseok bonaeseyo — "Have a happy Chuseok!" The all-purpose greeting.
풍성한 한가위 되세요.
Pungseonghan hangawi doeseyo — "May your Hangawi be full and abundant." Hangawi is the traditional name for Chuseok.

How to write your own (the 3-line formula)
Every message above follows the same quiet formula. Steal it:
- Name the distance. "Your window in Singapore, mine in Chengdu." Specificity is the whole trick — nobody else could send that line.
- Name one shared memory. The lantern street, grandma's knife-work, the double-yolk negotiations. One detail, not a paragraph.
- End on the moon. "Look up at nine — I'll look up too." The moon does the emotional heavy lifting; it has been doing it for a thousand years.
Three lines. If it sounds like something only you could send to only them — send it.
What the mooncake fillings actually mean
The box your colleague sent you is speaking in code. Here's the translation:
- Lotus seed paste (莲蓉) — purity and, because 莲 sounds like "continuous," an unbroken run of good years. The premium classic.
- Salted egg yolk (蛋黄) — the moon itself, hidden in the middle. A bright future; a family with a glowing centre. Double yolk = double the blessing.
- Red bean (红豆) — affection and longing. Red beans are the classical symbol of missing someone, which makes this the filling of choice for the far-from-home.
- Five kernel (五仁) — five kinds of nuts and seeds for the five blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue and a peaceful old age. Also the internet's most-debated filling. We stand by it.
- Snow skin (冰皮) — the modern one: no baking, served cold. Sending it says "our traditions are alive and still growing." Also, it's delicious.
One festival, three names
- China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia — 中秋节: reunion dinners, mooncakes and tea, lanterns in the parks, and 团圆 — the family made whole — as the whole point. A public holiday in China and Taiwan.
- Korea — 추석 (Chuseok): the year's biggest festival. Families travel home en masse, honour their ancestors, and shape songpyeon rice cakes together — folklore says a beautiful songpyeon means a beautiful future.
- Vietnam — Tết Trung Thu: the children's night. Lantern parades, lion dances, star-shaped lamps, and the whole neighbourhood out under the moon.
Same full moon, 25 September 2026, all three. If your circle spans all of them — and in most workplaces it does — one card acknowledging all three names is quietly the classiest move available.
